With
the advent of moral treatment, next we envision what would happen if The
Narrator (The Yellow Wallpaper), Dr. Jekyll (The Strange Case of Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), and Laura (Carmilla) were observed, diagnosed, and treated by experts in the new
practices of Moral Treatment. These experts, Phillipe Pinel and Samuel Tuke,
were writing at the same time as Haslam and Hallaran. We will refer to Pinel's (1806)
A treatise on insanity, in
which are contained the principles of new and more practical nosology of
maniacal disorders and
Tuke's (1813) Descripton
of The Retreat, an Institution near York, for Insane Persons of the Society of
Friends. Containing an Account of its Origin and Progress, the Modes of Treatment,
and a Statement of Cases.
